Senna died due to head injuries, and protection of the head and neck is the principal safety priority, as it is those traumas which are the most likely to cause death in the short time before on-track medical personnel can attend. +++ In 1994 Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna had fatal accidents in Imola. During the season, tracks were defused by installing additional chicanes in 27 particularly dangerous corners. Later, the HANS system was developed to protect the head and neck area of the drivers.

Before we get to the Sunday race, lets take a moment to remember Roland Ratzenberger. The Austrian was also tragically killed on this weekend, during qualifying on Saturday, as his car hit a wall he suffered a number of injures including a ruptured aorta, and passed away upon arrival at the hospital. The official cause of death being stated as a basilar skull fracture. Williams' team won seven drivers' titles and nine constructors' championships. They took their first grand prix win in 1979 and under Williams' leadership as founder and team principal they were a dominant force in the 80s and 90s. From inauspicious beginnings in a warehouse in Didcot, William's fierce determination to compete and be victorious paid off as he forged one of the most successful teams in F1 history.

Sadly it wasn't even the first death of the season as just before the third race in South Africa, American driver and two time grand prix winner Peter Revson was killed in testing at the country's Kyalami circuit. At this point, there were three drivers now able to win the world championship, with Scheckter only in with a mathematical shout seven points down. Lauda suffered a horrific end to the season with the rising star having retired from the final five races of the campaign. French-Canadian Gilles Villeneuve was one of the most well-known F1 drivers to have never won a world championship.
